Although just released less than a full two months ago, the Droid next-generation smart phone managed to sell over 100,000 units on it’s opening weekend (a far cry from the over-1Million sales for the IPhone, but IPhone users are slowly gravitating to the Droid, and it’s Android 2.0 platform). In a short couple of months, over 12,000 applications (apps) have been programmed, tested, approved and implemented in the Android platform. With many more apps being approved on a daily basis for use on the Droid, that number will climb rather quickly. But until then, there is only one Sports specific app available at the Droid App Store.
Now, don’t get me wrong here, there are other apps that are sports related, and are available at third-party websites, or directly from the people who programmed them. However, customer support will either be lagging or non-existant, and there may be hidden
and/or extra fees that will make your initial outlay of cash for the app seem miniscule. With that in mind, stick with Google approved apps for the Droid phone, run on the Android 2.0 platform.
Google has about 450 apps related to sports, but many of them are games, exercise related or simulations. With a laser-fast processor and ample on-board memory, the Android platform is perfectly suited for instant sports updates, notifications and replays.
The top-5 sports related apps for Android-run phones include, but in now way are limited to;
* Bing Sport Widget. This app brings the power of Google’s Bing search engine to the Android 2.0 powered Droid. All of the information is provided by Bing, so there will be a seamless and very fast connection and interaction.
* ESPN. Bring the full stat-driven power of the complete sports-reporting website to your Droid cell phone by downloading the ESPN app to your Droid. Everything that the ESPN website provides is available on the Droid’s version. Free.
* NBA League Pass Mobile. A very exciting app for basketball lovers, and unique in what it provides. You can watch up to 1,000 games during the regular season, and have every single game available for replay, once the game is finished. Sports score updates and the usual statistics are also available.
* Sky Sports News Widget. Places an icon on the Droid homepage for instant access. Gives up-to-the-minute scores and highlights, with notifications of major sports news and/or scores and highlight reels. Free.
* SportsTab. One of the better sports-related apps available at the Google Apps Store is SportsTab. SportsTab provides up-to-the-minute score updates and game starting time alerts, so that you won’t forget and miss your favorite team play an important game. SportsTab allows you to follow even the lowest calibre league teams, so that you can follow your favorite local team, no matter how good, or bad, they happen to be. Free.
With SportsTap, you can get live, play-by-play statistics displayed under a streaming video of the sports field, rink or court, which shows animated descriptions of each play. Do not think of 3-D play re-enactments, but the displays show the previous play, and how it developed and worked out, giving you a tool to visualize the play a whole lot better. SportsTab can be set up so that you only get the stats when you want them, like at 7:00p.m. every night.
There are sports apps available for the Droid that are more personal in nature, like exercise and workout videos and websites. There are apps that follow basically every team in most of the major sports (by attendance and national prestige), as well as local teams and
betting sites.
Of course, you can always access the web using your Android 2.0 fuelled smart phone. Once on the web, you can use your favourite web browser, or use Androd’s search engine, and access the web to enter some of the hottest and best-paying odds-makers (bookies), or sports-related websites. Almost all of Las Vegas’ betting sites are available, as are the sports reporting and streaming video sites. So why stick with the websites that you are familiar with for your sports fix, when you can experiment, and possibly find a new, and better favoritesports web site.
And, make sure that you stay tuned to the Google Apps store for new sports apps, especially while all downloads are free (a bonus stipulation that has not yet been given an end-date. With only about 12,000 apps presently available, and just SportsTab in the sporting genre, there will undoubtedly more sports-related apps available very soon at the Google Apps Store.
As programmers see that the Droid is the real deal, and is keeping it’s promises as per the operating speed and pure power of the Droid in multi-tasking, they are programming sports apps that will work wonders on the Droid, including, of course, betting and casino apps, with live horse racing and other betting games. Stay tuned!
